Geocache Description:

This location is the wall of an old quarry, which has some particulary important geological features.

Here you get a really good look at weathered siltstones and sandstones of the Tingalpa Formation. It also provides a really good look at beds of conglomerate (coarse-grained sedimentary rock composed of rounded fragments embedded in a matrix of cementing material such as silica: the sediments vary from coarse conglomerate to fine silt and clay).

The Tingalpa Formation is an eastern section of the Ipswich Sedimentary Basin rocks (the Ipswich Basin is a small, frontier petroleum basin. Covering about 8000 km2 onshore and probably covers an offshore area of about 1000 km2 under Moreton Bay), which developed from a deposition in freshwater lakes or swamps containing considerable plant fossilisation and which subsequently metamorphised into a pattern of coal measures.

This siltstone is fine-grained sedimentary rock consisting of consolidated silt.

Enjoy the great view and be careful of the edge and when you are ready answer the following questions and send them to the cache owner.

1. There are two primary parts of the rock face (top and bottom section). What are the primary colours you can see in the top half?
2. Find a rock nearby that looks similar to the rocks you can see on the bottom half. Looking at it closely, what does it look like the rock is made from?
