No. 3 - Catholic Church Precinct
Several buildings make up this Catholic Precinct which is currently occupied by brothers of the Franciscan order and not open to members of the public

Three nuns from the Sisters of Mercy religious order arrived in Newcastle (now named Toodyay) in 1884 to establish a school. After operating out of two houses on the main street they had their first two-storey building constructed here in 1903. This was funded almost entirely from a legacy left by Daniel Connor, who was a devout Catholic and the builder of Connor’s Mill which remains a feature of the centre of Toodyay.

The site continued to expand between 1905 and 1929 with the erection of girls and boys boarding houses, as well as the new Presbytery. The new St John the Baptist church was also erected in the grounds in 1963, replacing the earlier church across the road. In early 1972 the school closed but the Sisters remained until 2003 continuing their pastoral work in the community.
