Alvin W. Skelton
Veteran of the Civil War
Alvin Skelton enlisted as a Private in Company D of the 2nd Alabama Cavalry. Another Civil War Veteran, Private James Robert Sutton, served in the same company as Skelton; he is buried nearby in this same cemetery. Private Sutton managed to serve to the end of the war and completed a rather unique escort duty at the conclusion of the war. In contrast, Private Alvin Skelton was not with his company, but was instead in Tuscaloosa at the end of the war.
The records are not explicit, but appear to note that Private Alvin Skelton was wounded at some point. A note on his service record states that his “service continued until examined by board and discharged from field service.” A later note in his service record stated “was on duty in Quarter Master’s Office at Tuscaloosa when war closed.”
