Geocache Description:

You are seeking a short two stage multi cache that begins at the grave marker for James Robert Sutton, a Veteran of the Civil War.

James Robert Sutton, Veteran of the Civil War

Escort for President Jefferson Davis

The 2nd Alabama Cavalry Unit was organized in Montgomery in 1862. James mustered in a Private. At the conclusion of the war in 1865, Private James Sutton was among the regiment’s soldiers that laid down their arms at Forsyth, Georgia and were paroled.

One of the last duty assignments his regiment received was to escort Confederate President Davis from Richmond, Virginia to Georgia. In Georgia, the fleeing Presidential party reached the farming community of Irwinville on the evening of May 9. Assuming that they were a step ahead of the pursuing union army, they set up camp near a stream bed. Early the next morning, the camp was surrounded by the First Wisconsin and Fourth Michigan Cavalries. In the confusion of the confrontation, Davis threw his wife’s raglan (overcoat) on his shoulders and attempted to flee. A cavalryman from Michigan was able to capture him. This lead to the embellished story of President Davis being captured wearing women’s clothes.
