On March 13, 1862 William Banks enlisted as a Private in Company A of the 41st Infantry Regiment by signing his mark.  As the war progressed, Private Banks was promoted to Corporal, and then on August 30, 1863 he was promoted to Sergeant. The first major encounter that he led his men as a Sergeant was at the Battle of Chickamauga.
