Geocache Description:

You are seeking a short two stage multi cache that begins at the grave marker for John Mayfield, a Veteran of the Civil War.

John Mayfield

Soldier, Prisoner, Resident of the North

John Mayfield, like so many others buried in the Dunn’s Creek Cemeteries, enlisted to fight for the south in Company A of the 41st Alabama Infantry Regiment.  And like so many other young men, John entered the war young as he enlisted at 17 years of age, leaving the family farm responding to the glorious lure of fighting for the cause. Some were lucky enough to return bearing the scars of the war; Private Mayfield was one that finally made it home.

Private Mayfield probably did not consider himself to be one of the lucky ones as his days on the battlefield came to an end during the Knoxville Campaign. In northeastern Tennessee, as winter was settling in over the this mountainous area, General Longstreet and his Confederate army clashed with General John Parke of the Union army. On December 14, 1863 the two armies fought with neither the victor, and the next day both armies withdrew and went into winter quarters. Private Mayfield started his day on December 14 fighting alongside his Confederate brethren, and ended the day a prisoner of the Union. As a prisoner, he was taken to Knoxville, Tennessee where he was eventually paroled. After being paroled, John Mayfield went to Ohio until the close of the war. He then returned to Tuscaloosa County where he lived his life farming again.
