The Church
St John's Bodinnick must be one of Cornwall's smallest and least pretentious places of worship.
In 1948 the Vicar of Lanteglos. which is the parish church for Bodinnick, found that people would welcome his Evening Prayer at Bodinnick. The proprietor of the Old Ferry Inn offered the use of a room in a house which belonged to the Inn. The need for a proper church rose from these early meetings and services.
The proprietor of the Old Ferry Inn offered to give the parish the stable across the road from the Inn. This gift raised much enthusiasm in the village and the the use of the old stable was considered to be a symbolic offering. Men of the village cleared out the old stables and Arthur "Budda" Bate and his three brothers - Jim, Bernard and Russell - did much work on the stone structure to create the building as it is presently to be seen.
In 1949 the church was dedicated and the altar consecrated by Bishop Jack Holden, Assistant Bishop of Truro. The Church was named St John the Baptist because centuries ago there was in the village a chapel of ease of St John.
Today St John plays a full part in the worshipping life of the Parish of Lanteglos-by-Fowey.
