MS 07 - 52 PICK-UP Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

WA_Puzzler: The time has come to archive this series - five years is long enough and with so few finds, and even fewer solves, the recent fires have put the nail in the coffin for the series. At least 80% of the caches were retrieved a couple of days ago and are currently sitting on my back verandah, awaiting retrieval of the logs, and the others have been totally destroyed. Any caches out in place now are throw downs and finds on these will be deleted. Thankyou to all the geocachers who solved the puzzles and then enjoyed the finding of the caches. It really is a beautiful part of the WA bush, and a part that will forever be known as MS Land to many of us!

52 PICK-UP

52 Pick-Up is a 1986 crime thriller film directed by John Frankenheimer. The film stars Roy Scheider, Ann-Margret, and Vanity, and is based on a novel of the same name, which is a rip-roaring thriller from master of crime fiction Elmore Leonard, the New York Times bestselling author of Raylan, Get Shorty, Killshot, and other novels of suspense.

In both the film and the novel, Harry Mitchell is a successful industrialist living in the suburbs of Los Angeles whose wife Barbara is running for city council while he is having an affair. Harry is confronted by three blackmailers demanding $105,000 for a videotape of him and his mistress, Cini.

Because of his wife's political aspirations, he can't go to the police. Harry's lawyer advises him that paying the blackmailers won't likely make them go away, so he refuses to pay. The criminals up the ante by murdering Cini, capturing the killing on videotape and framing Harry for the murder, demanding $105,000 a year for the rest of his life to keep the evidence they have on him under wraps.

Harry opens his financial records to one of them with a background in accounting, Alan Raimy. Seeing that their mark owes money to the government and cannot afford the $105,000, Raimy agrees to accept Harry's counter offer of $52,000, at least as a first payment. Harry then turns the blackmailers against one another, putting his wife's life in grave danger in the process.

A stripper, Doreen, helps Harry, is assaulted by Raimy's accomplice, Bobby Shy, who then kills their third partner, Leo, believing he has betrayed them. Raimy successfully ambushes Bobby and Doreen, then kidnaps Harry's wife and sedates her with a hypodermic needle. Harry brings the $52,000 ransom and also gives Raimy his sports car, which explodes after Raimy turns the key.

52 Pickup is also a children's card game, using a standard deck of 52 playing cards, that is usually played as a practical joke. The name has also been used for solitaire versions and for legitimate educational children's games that are based on the fundamental principle of picking up scattered cards or objects.

To play 52 Pickup, any deck of cards will do, although the game works best with traditional playing cards. 'Unnecessary' cards such as jokers may be ceremoniously removed. The game mechanics require at least one player who is familiar with the game and one player who wants to be initiated into the game. The first player, as "dealer", throws the entire deck into the air so the cards land strewn on the floor. The other player must then pick them up.
