The Church
The church is dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, easily accessable on the A466 Monmouth/Hereford road.
Up until 1312 this site was owned by the Knights Templar but ownership then went to the Knights Hospitaller upon the suppresion of the Knights Templar, graves of which still reside in the large graveyard. The building consists of a tower, nave and chancel which are from the 13th century and the porch was added in the 14th century. The roof is from the 16th century but some of the original still exists.
Of great interest is the fantastic stone rood screen that was built in 1320 and is well worth a look if you have time (as is the striking black and white ceiling inside) and although the interior is almost entirely of bare stone it has a real light and airy feel to it. Of note is also the unusual roof window. All in all a very understated and undervisited little church that deserves a closer look!
The Cache
A hanging Bison-type container just outside the church grounds placed for an easy find. Parking is right next to the cache.
