Suigo-Itako Iris Garden

Suigo-Itako Iris Garden is a park of approximately 1.3 hectares in area. About 500 kinds of a million irises, "Ayame" in Japanese, are planted and bloom in the garden. The Ayame festival is held from late May to late June every year. You will see some bronze statues with local songs such as "Itako Bride" and "Itako-gasa" which are very famous songs in Japan.

Itako prospered as a way station of the transportation by Tone river. However, it was deserted gradually with the development of the Joban rail line. A "Sappa" was a hand-rowing boat and was indispensable transportation at the riverside district. When the wedding ceremony, the Sappa was really used to carry a bride and a trousseau. One day, a girl guided tourists with the Sappa. She got a favorable reception from tourists and came to be known as a boatman girl, "Musume Sendou san" in Japanese. Nowadays you can enjoy the Sappa riding only during the Ayame festival.

The cache is placed on a bridge in the garden. The festival period is a good season, but it will be slight hard to find it because there are many people... If you take some nice pictures, please upload them.

水郷潮来あやめ公園

面積約1.3ヘクタールの公園に約500種100万本ものあやめが植えられており、見頃を迎えると一面に咲き誇ります。毎年5月下旬～6月下旬に開催される「水郷潮来あやめまつり大会」の会場となっています。公園には潮来笠記念碑や潮来花嫁さん記念碑があり、ボタンを押すと曲が流れます。

潮来はもともと水運の中継地として栄えたのですが、利根川の変化や陸路の発展とともに、やがて寂れていきました。水郷では日常生活に欠かせない交通手段にサッパと呼ばれる舟がありました。この舟は、櫓を使う手漕ぎ舟「ろ舟」で、嫁入りする際には花嫁や嫁入り道具を運搬するときに実際に使われていました。あるとき地元の若い娘さんがサッパを操って街を案内したところ、観光客に好評を博したことから"娘船頭さん"として知られるようになりました。いまでは水郷潮来あやめまつり大会期間中に観たり乗ったりできると思います。
