Event venue details

Event aims

The core of this site is a series of fenced off areas of nutrient poor grassland growing on mounds of bricks left behind after the original brickworks' buildings were demolished. This grassland is constantly being invaded by scrub growth which in time produces mature trees. The Ranger Service has to allocate its resources to deal with both of these problems, and has put together a 10 year maintenance plan to remove inappropriate mature trees and to coppice scrub growth. By helping with the removal of scrub geocachers can free up the time of the Wardens to concentrate on the more specialised chain saw work. Some of the scrub growth removal also serves to produce locations suitable for bird monitoring on the site which, due to its proximity to the Middlewood Way and the Macclesfield Canal, is a site much used by migrant birds on their Spring and Autumn migrations. These same areas are thereby freed up for wild flowers, particularly large numbers of four species of orchid which the site favours.
The event will be preceded by a bird ringing demonstration from 0800-0900 subject to availability of birds. There is ample parking at listed coordinates

Needed on the day

Because of the original use of the site and previous coppicing work parts of the site are a bit rough; walking boots are the preferred footwear but wellies would suffice and after a dry spell even trainers might be OK. Most of the scrub being handled will be thin birch and willow; there is a minimum of bramble but gardening gloves would be advantageous. Material coppiced on the day will need transporting a short distance, typically 10 metres, and stacking into runs for small mammals to use. The location chosen in on the NortheEast of the site, curve which was originally the site of exchange sidings; in the days of the old Marple to Macclesfield railway line, these sidings were used to store wagonsbefore being exchanged onto the Stockport Buxton line and vice versa. The CITO will concentrate on coppicing the willow scrub in this area. A mixture of gardening implements are needed, mainly pruners, loppers, and bush saws
Thanks

Thanks are due to Peter Dowse of the Cheshire East Ranger Service for facilitating this event and to South Manchester Bird Ringing Group for providing (hopefully!) a live bird ringing session and of course yourselves for helping with this coppicing work..
