Geocache Description:

A cache placed near the Scaliger Railing, an exact copy of those surrounding the 14th century tombs of the House of Scaliger in Verona, Italy.

In 1890 Mr Charles Jenner, of Jenner's Department Store on Princes Street, Edinburgh, built the house as Queen's Bay Lodge in Milton Road East (now Charis House, the HQ for CrossReach, the Church of Scotland's Social Care arm. One of the biggest providers of social care in Scotland. Thank you Mrs Scothog for the update). The principal feature is the design of the enclosing railings. Mr Jenner had admired the originals so much so that he had a replica built for his home. The main motif of a ladder framed by ornamental ironwork is repeated throughout the design. The railings are an exact copy of those surrounding the tombs of the House of Scaliger, rulers of Verona in the 14th century. Their name comes from the Italian word scala, meaning ladder, hence the ladder motif. The plaque under railing reads: THE SCALIGER RAILING "VERONA" 1380. THIS EXACT COPY WAS MADE AT PORTOBELLO, MIDLOTHIAN, 1890, BY JAMES ROSS, BLACKSMITH, ALONG WITH DAVID GREIG, HIS ASSISTANT, IN THIS WORK.
