Another spider cache in the Muldersdrift area!
Long description:
Name: Banana Spider also known as Brazilian wandering or armed spiders.
Family: Ctenidae.
Average body length: Their body length ranges from 17 to 48 mm.
Identification: It has dense prolateral scopulae (a dense brush of fine hairs) on the pedipalp. The pattern on the ventral (underside) of the abdomen shows several rows of black dots, or an overall reddish colour. The characteristic defensive posture with frontal legs held high is an especially good indicator to confirm a specimen. See the background picture.
Habitat: They wander the jungle floor at night. During the day they hide inside termite mounds, under fallen logs and rocks, and in banana plants (hence the "banana spider"). Found mostly in South American countries, but not in South Africa.
Customs: The name banana spider comes from the fact that the spiders appeared in the USA hidden in imported bananas.
Venom: Wandering (banana) spiders appear in Guinness World Records as the world's most venomous spider! An effective anti-venom is available in some countries.
General: This is really a dangerous spider for humans and it is worthwhile to read more about them and the effects of their venom on humans.

The cache:
A small loc-to-loc container. You will have to climb down a small embankment about 2 meters high. Be very careful not to slip as the soil is loose in places. A pen is provided, but if you have one, take it along. Ensure that the lid is put back properly in its place to prevent moisture to enter the container. You can park next to GZ, but the road is busy at times. Enjoy!
