Welcome to the 5 mile hike series! This series is designed for those interested in getting out and hiking around without being too extreme about it. Each cache in the series is placed at the 2.5 mile mark and is accessible from a trail. Five mile hikes are great because you get plenty of exercise, lots of nature, geocaching, and it doesn’t take all day unless you want it to.
This cache is the fourth in the 5 mile hike series, and it is located 2.5 miles up the Mill Creek Trail (31E78). The trailhead is accessible from Kern Canyon Road, and it is clearly marked. Ample parking is available on the side of the road in one of the dirt turnouts.
Once there you will hike on a well developed trail through rolling oaks with the occasional cow. There are a series of 4 easy creek crossings and you might see a cow or a newt. Sometimes Mill Creek has water, and sometimes it doesn't. In the spring the area is often blanketed with flowers. I encourage you to upload a photo from your journey so that people can see what an enchanting region it is vicariously through your experience. In 2.5 miles you will reach mortar rock which has 17+ Indian mortars and is a nice place to take a break. The cache is filled with swag and is hidden somewhere near mortar rock. Please make sure it remains well hidden as it is a popular location with regular muggles. Good luck! Congratulations to McMike926 and Jwolfe for the FTF!
