Geocache Description:

The cache is no longer at the historical marker. You are looking for a pill bottle up by the trees.

Helium is a chemical element with the symbol He.  Helium is named for the Greek god of the Sun, Helios.  It was first discover as an unknown yellow spectral line in sunlight during a solar eclipse in 1868.  Norman Lockyer and Jules Janssen both were credit with detecting the element but it was Lockyer who propose it was a new element.

In May of 1903, a newly drilled natural gas well, in Dexter, Kansas, was found to contain a nonflammable gas.  Researchers from Kansas University found that the 'Dexter gas' contain 72% nitrogen and 15% methane, they also discovered 1.84% heluim.  This showed that heluim could be extracted as a by product of natural gas and it was concentrated in large amount under the Great Plains. This discovery made the United States the world's largest supplier of helium.

Lots of muggles stop here so please replace and put rocks back on top so it can't be seen.

While you are here there is a virtual cache Up Up & Away (GC32FE) at this spot and if you go to Dexter there is a cache Heluim Park (GC60MWF) to learn more about heluim.

Happy Caching!
