I ponti dell’Isolo

Rivers have always been used as a border or as a defensive embankment; but the fact remains the need to cross them, first with rafts or boats, then by ferry and finally by fixed: the bridges.
Verona has always been a strategic crossing from east to west, was equipped, since past many bridges.
Bridges, when discord war wanted the river to be the border between the French Verona and Austrian Verona, were first watched and then closed, but maintained.
Bridges that were so important from a strategic point of view that they were all mine and made collapse April 25, 1945 by the Germans on the run from Italy. Also the bridges Pietra and Castelvecchio despite much insistence of the Superintendency of Monuments and the Bishop at the German military command had obtained insurance formalized by a letter from Field Marshal Kesselring that the two bridges would be spared.
And so the bridges Catena, Castelvecchio, della Vittoria, Garibaldi, Pietra, Nuovo, Navi, Aleardi (this actually was mined just a stack as not yet fully rebuilt on that day) and San Francesco (in addition to the two bridges of the Railroad, one located in Parona and the downstream of Verona S. Francesco and the Bridge of the dam at Chievo) are actually "true" reconstructions of existing ones before the start of World War II.
In this multi meet only the most distinctive bridges but should also, however, a brief history of everyone else, except the two mentioned above Railway bridges and the Bridge Unit of Italy that belongs to recent history.
We will meet them as they met the Adige when, left the narrow Rivoli expands and comes to town.
Ponte Catena

Ponte di Castelvecchio
Built by Cangrande II della Scala said "Can rabid" who wanted an escape route to Tyrol understanding of not being loved by Veronesi. Finished around 1356 withstood all the floods of the Adige thanks to its construction archway he saw (the one where the river exerted more pressure) is larger than the other, until 1945 when it was undermined and collapsed. A careful work of reconstruction took place through the recovery of intact stones found in the river and other extracted from the same quarry from which they were removed the original allowed to return not only to Verona but to all mankind the bridge in 1951.
Ponte della Vittoria
Opened in 1929, it was decorated in 1931 with statues of heroes and horses, allegories of victory. After the destruction it was temporarily reconstructed with iron by the Americans in a day, while the reconstruction of stone was completed in 1955.
Ponte Garibaldi
In area it worked a ferry which gave its name to Riva Battello. Then came the iron bridge built in 1864 by the Newille company which took its name and who for 49 years ran the transit fee. Meanwhile in 1867, ceased Austrian rule, was named to the hero of the two worlds. In 1935 it was demolished and rebuilt in stone and adorned with four statues in the "lying". Citizens of Verona called him right away "the bridge of strachi".
The reconstruction and reopening after the war took place in 1947 instead.
Ponte Pietra
Unique Roman bridge come to our days. It consists of two materials: the stone that denotes the Roman origins and brick the medieval. Originally built with three arches, was enlarged with two arches by the Romans, it seems to work suggested by the new majority of the river at that site. In its long history it has had so many vicissitudes the last of which saw him collapse because of German mines. Its reconstruction was the one that lasted more. He was returned to the city in 1959.

Ponte Nuovo
Built from timber the first time in 1179 was called the Ponte Nuovo immediately. Collapsed in 1239, it was rebuilt in 1299 with the piles of stone and the rest in wood. Passing unscathed all subsequent floods but not of 1882 when "attacked by the waves, by the mills and from what the river carried with it" falls on the night of September 17. In 1883 it is rebuilt iron arched disk without piles that supported him and was dedicated to Umberto I was in Verona during the flood of 1882; It was replaced by a new iron bridge ever in 1894.
The stone bridge that replaced definitely iron structures was inaugurated on April 21, 1938. Just seven years before being shot down by the Germans. It was re-opened on Oct. 16, 1946.
Ponte Navi
So called because here were standing "vessels" that traveled between Bolzano and the sea.
It was built in 1373 to replace an existing Roman bridge a little further downstream. Near it was built in 1602 the customs duties. During the flood of 1757 collapsed leading to the headlines one stefanato of Verona, this Leone Bartolomeo said Rubele of which it is said in another cache (mystery Rubele). After the flood of 1882 and the burying of dead water was demolished and rebuilt in 1895. A new reconstruction was done in 1936 and again after the war in 1949.
Ponte Aleardi
Only bridge dedicated to the character of Verona Aleardo Aleardi was built of iron in 1879; shot down by the fury of the flood of 1882 was rebuilt always iron in 1884. The decision to build a concrete bridge is the 1940s, but construction was interrupted because of the war when they were built only two piles. These are made up by the Germans on the run. The reconstruction was completed around 1950.
Ponte San Francesco
Opened October 28, 1930, it is named after the bastion which rests the right shoulder. It was the twin of the Ponte Catena. The reconstruction was completed in 1950.
I ponti dell'Isolo
Now disappeared after the burial of the canale dell'Acqua Morta, bridges uniting the Isolo (home to several manufacturing activities that exploited the power and force of the water) and the islet to the mainland. Include the Ponte Pignolo.
