Church of St. Mary Magdalen

C12 origins, but rebuilt c1855 by Rev J.M Allen.
Ham stone ashlar with plain clay tiled roofs between moulded coped gables
with a variety of finials, behind traceried parapets.
Three-cell plan of 2 bay chancel, 3 bay nave and north transept with a
north-east corner vestry, south porch and north-west tower all in a scholarly Geometric style.
East side has a window that is '5 light' with headstop label and a trefoil vent over.
South side has a window that is '2 light', east bay with a simple arched doorway to west bay.
The vestry on the north-east has a flat roof behind plain parapet, 2 light window with square headstop label
and stairs down to the boiler room. North transept has Curvilinear tracery to parapets with corner gargoyles!
Nave has Curvilinear traceried parpets with simple tracery sided 2 light windows but the West gable is more
elaborate with 3 light reticulated windows flanked by ogee-arched niches holding C20 statues,
a traceried trefoil gable light over and the gable crowned with a crocketted tabernacle.
South porch is 2-order outer arch with applied flower boss ornament and wrought-iron gate
inner iron with elaborate ironwork straps to door, side walls have 2 small side windows.
Tower is 3 stage with flower boss ornament and gargoyles at top then capped with a spire,
that all so have windows with ballflower decoration and a doorway.
Inside the church has timber moulded rib and panel ceiling, ornamental carved stone dado,
patterned encaustic tile and some black & white diamond stone flooring, all the fittings of the 1850 especially the
octagonal wood pulpit on a slender base that has a richly decorated front with a fine timber cover, stalls, lectern & pews
and it also has an ornamental fireplace with cast-iron back, in the nort transept memorials to some of the Pitt family
that have stong ties in the village including chancel table tomb.

around the church anti-clockwise past the main door.
