Geocache Description:

A simple cache that will bring you to a unique place in Croydon's history, with unsurpassed views of the surrounding suburbs and beyond.

When visiting this cache note that this is now an active church, so please maintain appropriate respect when viewing the heritage listed building and surrounds. Their current Mass times can be seen at (visit link) though they also hold weddings, funerals and other services, and this may prevent you from easily accessing the cache.

The Sacred Heart Croydon Monastery was built by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart, an order founded in France in 1854. It opened in April 1939 as a new seminary for missionaries who then went out across Australia, Papua and Torres Straits islands. After almost 50 years, due to declining numbers seminary studies were relocated to Sydney.

In 1991 the monastery was sold to the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne to serve as the parish centre of Croydon and East Ringwood. The original chapel was significantly extended toward the cloisters in 2000 to accommodate the merged parishes. By 2002 the outer buildings of the original seminary had fallen into disrepair, and the extensive land around the monastery was set aside for the progressive construction of the retirement village, Mingarra. Further details can be found at (visit link)

The cache itself should be physically accessible by wheelchair by most who can lift themselves/be lifted off the seat. It is principally a 'park and grab' though if coming on wheels from Wicklow Avenue, not all wheelchair users may be able to safely ascend and descend the path/road leading up to the monastery. As a guide, many of the retirement village residents regularly make this journey to/from the centre of Croydon on motorised wheelchairs. There is also a much flatter route through the retirement village from Mount Dandenong Road / Murray Road (see the additional waypoint).
