The AP2259, also called Rante Posroete, is an alternative road between Fraserburg and Sutherland and one which I prefer to travel on. Although this gravel road is 29 kilometers longer than the normal route via the R356 it offers so much more. There are breathtaking views round every corner, an English mass grave where 9 British soldiers are buried from the Anglo-Boer War and Bloukoppie from where a battle was forged. Along the way you will encounter pear trees that are 200 years old. Do yourself a favour and travel to Sutherland via this road. The road is in a good condition and suitable for sedan vehicles. Put it on your bucket list, you won't regret it.
