Hurricanes are among earth’s fiercest forces. Unlike most other natural forces, hurricanes can now be predicted and tracked. Riding out one of these storms, however, usually comes at a high cost. Rain, flooding, wind, and tornadoes are just a few of the perils. Isabel proved to be the costliest, deadliest, and strongest hurricane of the 2003 season. Caches by the hundreds were destroyed as a result. After peaking as a category 5 storm it made landfall with winds of 105 mph. Names associated with hurricanes usually return but this one was retired following the 2003 season due to the excessive damage and deaths associated with it. Even today, the damage associated with this storm can be seen along the coast of our state.
