I copied this from the Rock of Ages II that was here prior. Using the same coordinates as well. Parking is easy to find. Just remember to keep off the road since most of the traffic in this area are Dump Trucks and the like. Please pay attn to all traffic, especially those with children.
"This is the same as the final stage of the original Rock of Ages. Access to the original way point has been blocked. This is now a fairly simple drive-up.
As best I can fathom from my roadside geology book and other sources, these basalt outcroppings are from eruption flows onto the floor of an ocean many, many years ago (50 million). Have a good look at the cold, "hard" interior of a lava flow. Rumor has it that this source that you are looking at is the best quality road gravel in Thurston/Mason Counties.
Just east on this short back-road and then left up The Old Olympic Highway is the Squaxin Indian Tribal Museum which is way cool and lesser known but way more interesting than the Casino that is just north on the freeway.
My mother-in-law remembers, as a child, traveling on the Old Olympic Highway on the 2 - 3 hour trip from Shelton to the big city of Tacoma before we thought we needed to go 70 mph."
