The name is said to derive from when Lucas was making one of his earlier films, American Graffiti. Sound editor Walter Murch states that he is responsible for the utterance which sparked the name for the droid. Murch asked for Reel 2, Dialog Track 2, in the abbreviated form "R-2-D-2". Lucas, who was in the room and had dozed off while working on the script for Star Wars, momentarily woke when he heard the request and, after asking for clarification, stated that it was a "great name" before falling immediately back to sleep.
According to literature on the matter, R2-D2 stands for Second Generation Robotic Droid Series-2.
I created this container as a gift to a geocaching podcast host by the name of gslink&slinkymama, a.k.a Gary! This particular container was my first attempt, and as you can see it doesn't quite line up correctly. My second attempt was much better, albeit not perfect... but that one is now in Gary's hands. We are now on the 4th version of this container, and although it doesn't look nearly as good as previous versions that my wife painted for me, I think the construction of this one will hold up much much longer. Just don't laugh at my painting job, it's definitely not as good as when my wife does it!
I tried very hard to find a themed location, but there were Zero in the City. Well, I take that back, there was once a Post Office Box near the Alamo that was painted to match the container, and there still is a trash can along the Riverwalk that is painted the same way. Unfortunately, there is another cache too close to that particular location for me to hide one nearby. If you look at the shops facing Evans you might figure out why I chose this location. Anyway, when you twist the pieces back together after signing the log, make sure it's on snug enough not to drop down the black hole beneath!
