Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the listed coordinates

In 1911 there was only one known Catholic in Bourne, and at the time of the outbreak of the second world war there were still only a handful. Catholics at the time had to travel to Deeping to attend mass. In the late 1940's a group of Catholic women formed the Altar Society to raise money to build a Catholic church in Bourne. In 1950 they bought a plot of land accessible by an alleyway from Exeter Street and a hut (each of which cost £100) and this became a temporary church and dedicated to the Sacred Heart.

From 1957, Bourne and The Deepings became part of a parish that included Corby Glen, where the priest was based. The priests were from the Sacred Heart Fathers, which is a missionary society. Major fund raising activities took place through the 1960's and into the 1970's to build permanent churches, first in Deeping St James, which opened in 1968, and then in Bourne which opened in 1976. The church in Bourne is named after St Gilbert of Sempringham. In 1984, the new parish which of Bourne and Deeping was formed, the priests were no longer from the Sacred Heart Fathers, but were appointed by the Bishop of Nottingham.

The church is of an unusual geometry, an irregular heptagon. Five of the sides are as they would be in a regular octagon, but with what would be the northern side removed and and its two adjacent sides drawn out to a point. This can be seen particularly well on Google Earth. When the parish priest at the time, Fr Peppard, commissioned the church, he wanted it to serve for social functions too, so a folding screen can be drawn across the sanctuary, which is set within the point of the heptagon, to enable social functions to take place in the main part of the church. Between the internal walls and the perimeter of the octagon are meeting rooms, kitchen, bar toilets and sacristy.
