Geocache Description:

This cache should be an easy find so we're not going to supply a clue. Sometimes it's just too darn easy then. There aren't many cemeteries left available to drop a cache into so we thought we would take advantage of this one. Camoed container with room for a trinket or two. Initially we left a cemetery themed trackable in it and from time to time we will come back to check the cache and drop off another such TB.

Previous cache at this location - RoWC #4

It is unclear when the area was first used as a cemetery and under whose jurisdiction but the land appears to have been purchased by the West Woolwich branch of the Mennonite Church in 1854. There is some conflicting evidence regarding the date of the first burial which seems to have taken place either in the early 1850s or the early 1860s. It appears the area was chosen as a cemetery in response to a need for a non-denominational burying ground in Elmira. The Elmira Union Cemetery Company was established in 1884. John Ratz was the President of company in 1885. It appears that the Elmira Union Cemetery Company operated the burying ground for 42 years until 1926. After 1926 the cemetery was regulated and maintained by the Town of Elmira.
