Geocache Description:

A place many would drive by without giving it a second thought..

The first time I drove by here in  Fall 2014, I caught my breath. I had just moved to Wharton and my 9 month old son and I were going to 'explore' Glen Flora, as we had seen it on the drive in whilst moving. I pulled in immediately and stopped to look around. I LOVE old sites,., and this was one for the books. The sun was still rising from the East, lighting this abandoned church and cemetery with amazing color.

Fast forward to October 2015 when I started geocaching. This was the first place I thought of that needs a cache. Others need to stop, look around, and enjoy this seemingly forgotten place.

"This is a community Negro cemetery located on FM 102 between Wharton and Glen Flora. It was surveyed by Don Baylor on Jul 08 1988. A note indicates that the New Prosperity Church might have been started in 1918 when East Gate Cemetery was abandoned. There were sixty-four markers when the cemetery was surveyed in 1988. The oldest grave is for Sallie Ray, who died Aug 14 1917."

While out placing the cache, I looked around and the most recent graves are 2014 and 2015 so it is still being utilized.

Please be respectful of where you are, and place cache back just as you found it for the next one to come along. As usual, watch out for stickers, mosquitoes, wasps, ant hills, spiders, snakes and all sorts of other South Texas wildlife. Don't reach into something without first investigating, use a stick first, as something might be living there. I have a feeling that this cache is easier found in the winter (now) than the summer.
