A Central Nuclear Almirante Álvaro Alberto, situada em Angra dos Reis, foi assim denominada em homenagem ao pesquisador pioneiro da tecnologia nuclear no Brasil e principal articulador de uma política nacional para o setor. Embora a construção da primeira usina tenha sido sua inspiração, o Almirante, nascido em 1889, não chegou a ver Angra 1 gerando energia, pois faleceu em 1976. Mas sua obra persiste na competência e capacitação dos técnicos que fazem o Brasil ter hoje usinas nucleares classificadas entre as mais eficientes do planeta.
Atualmente estão em operação as usinas Angra 1, com capacidade para geração de 640 megawatts elétricos, e Angra 2, de 1350 megawatts elétricos. Angra 3 (em construjção) está prevista para gerar 1405 megawatts elétricos.
A primeira usina nuclear brasileira entrou em operação comercial em 1985 e opera com um reator de água pressurizada (PWR), o mais utilizado no mundo. Com 640 megawatts de potência, Angra 1 gera energia suficiente para suprir uma cidade de 1 milhão de habitantes.
A segunda usina nuclear brasileira começou a operar comercialmente em 2001. Com potência de 1.350 megawatts, Angra 2 é capaz de atender ao consumo de uma cidade de 2 milhões de habitantes.
