Geocache Description:

This cache is located near the WEAU / WAXX transmission tower.

Zuma had placed a cache here in 2010.  I have included some of the information from his cache. The cache container is from scaffdogs "If You Plant It They Will Come" cache. Thank you both for your donations to this cache.

In 1981, TV-13 built the 2000 foot tower here, the tallest man-made structure in Wisconsin. In addition to being the tallest structure in the state, this tower is also tied for 4th in the country, and 7th in the world in the listing of tallest structures. Since the government rarely approves towers over 2000 feet, there are 18 other towers across the country also listed as being 1997, 1998 or 2000 feet tall, depending on the source." (Zuma)

The WEAU broadcast tower stood as the tallest man made structure east of the Mississippi for 45 years. On March 22nd 2011 at about 8:30 pm, it collapsed. While it’s still unclear exactly what caused the tower to fail, the weather that day was windy and icy, which could have caused collapse. The tower fell in about three different directions. One part of the tower fell across County Road H.

Wisconsin’s Tallest Structure was replaced in a record 9 months allowing WEAU to begin broadcasting from it's new 2,000 foot tower on December 24, 2011.

The galvanized steel structure weighs more than a million pounds, is steadied by 24 guy wires and stands on a single-point base, which WEAU says can sway up to 17 feet at its peak.

This link is documentary of the tower's history:      http://www.stainlessllc.com/Videos/WEAUDocumentary.htm

How tall is it?

  • WEAU tower, Fairchild, Wis.: 1,998 feet
  • Willis Tower, Chicago: 1,451 feet
  • Empire State Building, New York: 1,250 feet
  • WXOW antenna, La Crescent: 815 feet
  • Dairyland Power’s No. 3 stack, Genoa: 500 feet
  • Grandad Bluff (from base to park shelter) —  526 feet
  • Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman (steeple): 217 feet
  • U.S. Bank building, La Crosse: 148 feet

This is a small cache and should be Winter friendly. The day this cache was placed was cloudy and overcast, the top of the tower was not visable.  While checking out the tower notice how small the base is.
