Geocache Description:

Winkelman flooding.  A neighborhood destroyed and turned into a park.

In 1926 one of the worst floods in local history roared down the San Pedro Valley, backing up the Gila river. It destroyed most of the farm land and flooded lower Winkelman (also known as Winkelman Flats). Then again in 1983 devastating flood water hit the Winkelman flats.  The townspeople rebuilt, thinking that it would not flood for another 50 years.  But in 1993 disastrous floods hit again.  This time, the townspeople had had enough, and through FEMA sold their homes-- all but one resident, whose home is still standing today.
