Geocache Description:

A chance to learn about Gully Erosion while at a beautiful state park!

Gullies are created by water running over the surface of land.  This action removes the soil and creates what most would call a ditch.  This process in its entirety is known as erosion.  As the water finds its natural draining areas the soil is washed away leaving what you see in front of you.  One way this process is started is by poorly planned farming techniques.  Some techniques linked to eventually forming gullies are –

• Overstocking and overgrazing

• Inappropriate farming techniques such as deep ploughing land 2 or 3 times a year to produce annual crops

• Lack of crop rotation

• Planting crops down the contour instead of along it.

Preventing ground cover loss will help minimize this from occurring.  Lack of ground cover is the number one contributor to gully formation.

In order to log this cache you must fulfill the following requirements.

  1. On the nearby sign what decade does it say the problems that caused this erosion occurred?

  2. What is your best estimation of how deep this erosion goes at this point?

  3. (Optional) Take a picture of yourself at some point along the erosion.

This cache is located on Mistletoe State  Park.  There is a $5.00 parking fee if you don't have an annual parkig pass.  Please obey all park rules while present on their property.
