八ヶ岳は、長野県の諏訪地域と佐久地域および山梨県の境にある火山群で、南北30km余りの長さがあります。
「八ヶ岳」は山塊の総称であり、山そのものに八ヶ岳と名付けられた山は存在しません。
最高峰は赤岳（2,899m）で、個性豊かな山々が聳えています。
横岳・硫黄岳・阿弥陀岳の鋭い峰々、そして「諏訪富士」とも言われる美しい蓼科山などなど。
また地元には民話も伝わっていて、「昔、お互いに日本一高い山と主張して争っていた富士山と八ヶ岳との間に樋かけて水を流し、どちらに流れるかで背比べをしたが、八ヶ岳が勝った事に怒った富士山に蹴飛ばされて八つの峰になった」、「蓼科山は八ヶ岳の妹で、八つの峰になった八ヶ岳を見て泣いて、それが川になり溜まったのが諏訪湖だ」とされています。
諏訪の人は、八ヶ岳をほぼ毎日目にしています。
ここでも天気の良い時はその雄大な山々を眺めることが出来るでしょう。
