So most of our caches have a story. We enjoy stories, and K listens to them watching Hulu or something pretending to listen to me ramble on about geocaching. Don't misunderstand us though, she loves geocaching. But she hates the cold. The rain. The snow. The anything-besides-80-and-sunny weather. We're always at odds geocaching in the winter because I love the challenge in the weather most of the time. I'll trek through the snow to find a geocache any day. Maybe it's my male ego coming through, or maybe I'm crazy...?! We'll address that topic later. Regardless of everything said before, here is how this cache made it's way here.
Bear5719 introduced Kay and I to geocaching and told us about their wild geocaching adventures while they were camping. They are from The Lone Star state though, so cold is usually not a problem. Forgetting that super important detail, I wanted to take Kay camping at some point to experience our own adventures, but she always refused. Something about dirt, bugs, cold, ect, ect. When I finally had her convinced, we went shopping for things we knew we needed. This was one of those items. After we bought everything, we ended up abandoning our plans because it was so cold outside. Dang, foiled by that cold! We decided to take a trip to a nice warm hotel instead So we could stay dry and warm. So this item got lost in our house and proceeded to collect dust.
Then I was cleaning the house one day and found it, and after a long day of warm geocaching I knew it could be put to good use. I was always finding these wet logs, water soaked caches, and this promised to put an end to that. I painted it and we found a spot for it on Christmas. Placed it with intent to publish it ASAP. It's been out there since. I wanted to test it of course! Just before I was ready to publish it...We went out to check on it. It had been through buckets of rain, snow, ice, snow and ice, rain and snow and ice--all the perfect combinations of cold weather! Perfectly dry. Hopefully it stays that way for all of you too, along with a warm geocaching day!
The official word from Kelly Kingery, of Five Rivers, is that you can park at the gate and go for the cache, via a more or less direct path, if the gate is closed--during the park's normal hours of operation. However, if the gate is closed, indicating that the park is closed for the season, don't do anything but go for the cache. (In other words, don't head back to the trails with your bike or try to use the park for its other "more normal" uses. The cache is in the front area of the park.) This caveat has nothing to do with the gate being closed during the open season simply because it's nighttime or after-hours. This is not a 24/7 cache.
