O Centro Esportivo Tietê tem uma área de 50.000 m² e anteriormente era sede do Clube Regatas Tietê, que em seus melhores momentos (década de 1970) teve mais de 35 mil sócios e em anos anteriores, o clube deu guarida a uma série de esportistas bem-sucedidos, como o nadador Abílio Couto, a nadadora Maria Lenk e a tenista Maria Esther Bueno, que foi homenageada com uma estátua de bronze localizada na entrada do Centro Esportivo.
O C. R. Tietê criou, a partir de 1924, a travessia a nado no Rio Tietê, tornando-se um evento tradicional por longos anos. O percurso era de 5,5 quilômetros, iniciando na Ponte da Vila Maria até o Espéria, na Ponte Grande. Em 1935, 1936 e 1947, a disputa foi vencida pelo jovem João Havelange (que mais tarde tornou-se presidente da Fifa). Em sua última participação, em 1948, ele contraiu tifo negro e ficou dois anos internado. Em 1972, as regatas foram transferidas para a raia olímpica da Universidade de São Paulo - USP.
Com uma dívida de mais de R$ 25 milhões, o clube Tietê fechou as portas em 2012, após uma tentativa de sanar algumas dívidas com o empréstimo de seu terreno para a prefeitura municipal, porém, este contrato foi finalizado em 2009 e não renovado.
No dia 26 de abril de 2012, a justiça de São Paulo determinou a devolução do terreno de mais de 50 mil metros quadrados à prefeitura. A área administrada pela prefeitura, por meio do Decreto 53.832/2013, transformou-se em centro esportivo municipal, com custo estimado em R$ 14 milhões.
O Centro Esportivo Tietê conta com um gramado sintético de 20.000 m² instalado para receber grandes shows e espetáculos. Tem cinco ginásios, quatro quadras de tênis, quatro de basquete 3x3, quatro quadras poliesportivas, além de um salão de jogos. O espaço também oferece uma pista de caminhada, playground para as crianças, uma brinquedoteca e uma sala de leitura. Segundo a Secretaria de Esportes da Prefeitura de SP (SEME), até o final de 2016, o equipamento deverá receber uma pista de skate, que será instalada em uma área de 3.000 m² cujo projeto executivo ainda está sendo finalizado.
Há restrições para a entrada de animais domésticos. Há bicicletários para guardar as "bikes".
