Geocache Description:

Another site that we always knew needed a GC - who would've thought - Giant Canadian Redwood Trees in the middle of Harkerville. PLEASE take heed of distance and terrain to get to this one.

The 4th in a series of caches (or 'treasures' as they're called by our 4 year old little boy) that were all made up by him (with a little assistance from Dad).

As we're a family very keen on Mountain Biking, and very fond of the Harkerville forests, we simply could not pass up this location for a GC. Who would've thought (or known) that there are Giant Canadian Redwood Trees in the middle of these forrests.! Planted in 1925, as one of a few selected experimental plots throughout SA, the biggest tree in this plot has a diameter at breast height of 160cm which is the largest recorded in this country for Redwood trees and has a height of 33m.

The Californian Redwood is native to West Coast of USA where they grow naturally, reaching heights of 100m and diameters of 4.5m.

PLEASE be aware that you can find this GC on the Yellow / Blue MTB trails and allow at least 2 hours for completion by amateur MTBers. For hiking (and MTB) you can take a more direct route directly to the GC which is about 3.5km from the parking area opposite Garden of Eden. Either way, be sure to allow adequate time, wear proper shoes (if walking) and take water and refreshments.

Our little boy started geocaching with us at the age of 3 in Dec 2014 and absolutely loves it, especially the GC's large enough to have lots of goodies to look through. He's now almost as good as us at finding GC's that are within his reach/height.!

Accordingly, he was very excited to hit the shops to buy goodies, bottles, notepads, pencils, etc and to pack his 'treasures' ready for deployment.

As avid MTB'ers (even him), we discussed this hiding place with him and agreed where the GC should go. He started off in a seat on the back of my bike at 9 months old but now has his own 'half wheeler' that joins onto my bike. He hid it for other kids (& adults) to enjoy finding, opening, looking through, trading and enjoying.

This is a small / medium GC, well disguised and hidden behind a natural object. Not meant to be a difficult find, althoug the terrain getting to this GC is quite challenging unless on a family MTB ride or hike and even so, please be aware of the distances. Note that my GPS had 3m accuracy at all reading times.

You can park at the start of the trails at Garden of Eden or direclty accross the road. PLEASE NOTE that entry permits ARE required and can be purchased at GOE. Not many muggles, but certainly plenty of MTBers on any day in holiday season - easy to disguise yourself as there's an information board to stop and read.

There is a pencil and sharpener to sign the log book and keep the pencil sharp. You can trade small items and please do.
