Geocache Description:

Many of you might know, this bike trail was the old Wheelwright branch line on the Boston and Maine Railroad.  The last run was in 1979.  This line served Amherst Farmers Supply, which is down the trail a bit.  Hard to believe there was a railroad crossing on busy Rte 9?

It is true!  Imagine seeing steam locomotives over this?  The bike trail built the tunnel because of safety.  Otherwise, could you imagine crossing Rte 9 safe?  I remember the road took a turn even.  In 1979, the Boston and Maine Railroad was using Alco locomotives to move freight on this line.  Hadley Coal and Grain, which is now the Quarters Bar in Hadley, was that place.  Notice how that place looks like a old freight type house?  I remember the rails and seeing trains on here.  I am not that old, but it sure is making me feel that way.  Think about the railroad crossing on Rte 9 while you are looking for this cache.  Bring your own pen.  There is a high muggle alert and please use stealth.
