A Spanish attempt was made in 1570 to establish a Jesuit mission in the vicinity of the Virginia Peninsula to bring Christianity to the Virginia Indians. What was to be called St. Mary's Mission predated the founding of the English settlement at Jamestown by about 36 years. However, in February 1571, all of the party were massacred by natives except a young boy named Alonso de Olmos. The following year, a Spanish party from Florida went to the area for revenge and reclaimed Alonso. An estimated 20 natives were killed in the confrontation.
The Waller Mill Park Bike Trail is a two mile multiuse asphalt path connecting Rochambeau Drive and Mooretown Road. Parking/entrance fee is $2.00. Additional park information is available in the "Related Web Page" link. A big thank you to the City of Williamsburg for allowing us to geocache along this wonderfully maintained trail.
