La Via dei Cavalleggeri
I Cavalleggeri ( il corpo della guardia costiera ) già dal Cinquecento avevano il compito di difendere ed avvistare eventuali sbarchi di pirati saraceni e turchi. Nel 1788 venne istituito un servizio di posta tra Livorno e Portoferraio che si svolgeva proprio sul percorso di questa strada. Durante la dominazione napoleonica si tentò di rendere la strada carrabile ma i lavori non vennero eseguiti forse per le insormontabili difficoltà dell'orografia del promontorio. Nel 1832 lo studioso P. Pifferi descrive il suo viaggio lungo la strada :
« ...ci dirigevamo lungo la marina... Avevamo da una parte il mare, dall'altra le montagne erme e deserte e piene di boscaglie e macigni. Cominciammo fin d'allora a concepir l'idea del paese, ch'eravamo per trascorrere ; mentre una solitudine ed un tetro silenzio ci accompagnava per ogni dove, incontravasi solo di tratto in tratto qualche torre, dove vedevasi pochi soldati, dall'ozio consumati e dalla miseria »
La via dei Cavalleggeri è sempre stata percorribile solo a piedi o a cavallo perché, in particolare nel tratto del Promontorio seguiva la costa rocciosa solcata da torrenti e fossi e pertanto il percorso era necessariamente un continuo sali e scendi con alcuni ponticelli che consentivano il più facile passaggio delle vallette.
Il tratto da Baratti a Piombino è stato oggi recuperato come itinerario escursionistico e costituisce oggi un percorso di straordinario interesse paesaggistico che offre alla vista scenari del tutto nuovi ( alcuni tratti sino ad oggi non erano percorribili ) che si aprono verso le isole dell'Arcipelago Toscano fino alla Corsica.

The Cavalleggeri Road
The Via dei Cavalleggeri has very ancient origins : the 16th century route linked the two main settlements on the coast, Livorno and Piombino, allowing armed soldiers on horseback to patrol the coast. Ever since the 16th century, the Cavalleggeri ( the light-armed coastal guards on horseback ) were responsible for defending the coast and keeping a look-out for any landings by Saracen and Turkish pirates.
In 1788 a postal service was set up between Livorno and Portoferraio which traveled along this road.
During the Napoleonic domination there was an attempt to make this road suitable for carriages to use. However, the work was never carried out, perhaps because of the insurmountable difficulties along large sections of the route. In 1832 a scholar, P. Pifferi, described his journey along the road:
« ...we traveled along the Sea Road...We had the sea on one side, and the solitary, deserted hills on the other, full of woodland and boulders. It was then that we began to conceive a notion of the Land which we were passing through ; while a solitude and a gloomy silence accompanied us in every place. Once in a while we would come across some towers, where a few soldiers were to be seen, worn out by inactivity and wretchedness».
The Via dei Cavalleggeri has always been usable on foot or horseback, because, especially in the Promontory section, it followed the rocky coast, interrupted by gullies and seasonal streams, and so the route was necessarily a continual series of ups and downs, some bridged by small footbridges allowing easier transit across the gullies.
The route from Baratti to Piombino has been restored as a hiking trail. Today, it is of extraordinary interest for enjoying the landscape, offering completely new vistas ( some sections had not been accessible for some time ), with views at intervals out across the sea, towards the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, as far as Corsica.
