From the cache location, look to the east. The tree line marks the location of the old railroad depot (to the south of the tracks). A small side road separated it from Watry's Tavern. The tavern was a two story structure, with the upper floor being a dance hall.
During the 1920-1940's my grandfather was an independent trucker, and made various deliveries around the county. After he had died, one of his neighbors told me the following story: he had been coming back from up north, and passing Watry's he noticed two cars he did not recognize. He drove into town, and stopped at a couple of the 'bars', sticking his head in the door and saying 'Revenuers'. Then he went home.
Another story I heard from my mother was about the end of WW 2. Main street was parked bumper to bumper with cars, as the whole town was celebrating. My grandfather and some of his buddies got on top of the cars, and were dancing down the street, when the group stepped onto a soft top and went tumbling through the roof.
My grandfather later served as the first Chief of Police for the Village.
