Geocache Description:

Recently the infamous Hilbre Buccaneer has been causing all sorts of problems in North West Wirral. He’s been seen heading across to Hilbre Island, so maybe you can find him, or at least find his treasure.

This is a Wherigo geocache so you need to download the cartridge to a Wherigo enabled GPS, Smartphone or PocketPC. Click on the image below to get the cartridge and follow the instructions given on that page. As with all Wherigo geocaches, you need to look and try all options as your adventure progresses. It will automatically save the game at each stage, thus enabling an easy game restart if required. Do not switch your device off or you may miss key events during the adventure.

Hilbre Buccaneer

The only way to get to Hilbre Island is on foot, and it is about a two-mile walk each way from Dee Lane Slipway, West Kirby, via both Little Eye and Middle Eye. Good footwear (walking boots or wellingtons) are necessary and care must be taken on the slippery rocks on the way across and walk back. The islands are a Local Nature Reserve so please stay on the paths and do not harm the environment. Dogs are welcome, but they should be kept on a lead at all times.

The Islands are cut off from the mainland by the tide for up to four hours out of every twelve so check the tide times and allow plenty of time. You should leave Hilbre Island at least 3 hours before high water (3.5 hours for high tides over 9.5m). There are no shops on the island so take your own food and drink (there are basic toilets on the island as well at those at the walk start). The weather can change very quickly and there is little shelter, so take waterproofs and warm clothing. You undertake this walk entirely at your own risk.

Permission has been given for this cache (and the EarthCaches on the islands) by the Wirral Country Rangers as there are no physical placements on the islands. The final cache is therefore back on the mainland after your visit.
