The Village Green
We love coming to Moulin using it as the beginning and end of many lovely walks. Our favourites are the walks up to the top of Craigower and even Ben Vrackie if we are feeling particularly energetic. Perfect place for a pint of ale which is brewed by the local micro brewery!
Moulin has been a settlement since the bronze ages and was originally the start of what was to become Pitlochry. There is evidence of the Hut Circle remains, a number of Standing Stones in the immediate area and other circles of Stones nearby. The Parish of Moulin encompassed the whole area of Moulin and Pitlochry, but Pitlochry itself began to grow as early as 1745.
Moulin was a staging post, keeping Horses and Carriages in the Coach House ready to take visitors across the moor to Kirkmichael or down to Perth, but the more usual task was a trip to the railway station to meet the latest train and the ever increasing stream of visitors.
Motorists began to arrive in the 1920’s and a new set of visitors with them, with ever changing demands. The old Blacksmiths shop next to the Hotel evolved into a Motor Garage with petrol tanks and cars for hire, by 1970 this had been knocked down and the further extension of 10 en-suite bedrooms took its place. By now Moulin village had begun to expand with new houses being erected on the outskirts.
The one feature of the village which survived these times was the Moulin Kirk, though little of the original structure remains, due to at least 3 fires, the most recent in 1886. We suggest the Moulin Meanderings multi-cache to find out more about the kirk on your visit to Moulin.
The Village Green has been here all this time with the ancient tree growing in the centre. It now has a Jubilee Seat commemorating the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953 and her Silver Jubilee in 1977.
