Drove all over Fort Smith trying to find a place to hide a cache, when all of a sudden I hear mom shriek out, "OMG! I never thought I'd see one of those again!" My gaze followed hers and what I saw is likely to strike fear into all of your hearts. It was two Jackalopes jousting right in the middle of a parking lot! The vicious creatures were locked into what looked like a heated territorial battle. Mom and I pulled in to get a closer look and that's when she began to tell me the tale of when she was a small tot out on the great Wyoming plains. She was wandering around and stumbled upon a little baby rabbit..or so she thought...she brought him home and her mama helped her nurse him back to health. They named him Jasper and within a year he had grown antlers! They were shocked. Pretty soon he was bigger than their wolfhound. Her pa decided to "break him" and began riding him in area rodeos and every once in a while her ma rode him too. One day my mom was old enough and decided she would ride him around the ranch. This was a bad mistake because while they were out riding they ran into another Jackalope who immediately ran up and started fighting poor Jasper! Mom was knocked off his back and nearly gored and she sat in the field looking on in horror as her pet fought for his life. Luckily, Jasper made it out ok and lived to a ripe old age. Mom had nearly forgotten about the whole incident until she saw the fight alongside the road today. Or maybe she had nearly forgotten it because it never happened. Either way, those jackalopes looked pretty dangerous to us so be careful out there folks, looks like they're moving into town...maybe the flooding brought them in?!
