Frankton Saleyards Traditional Cache
iammrwalker: Had every intention of replacing this one but have struggled to find a suitable replacement container. The area it was hidden has changed for the worse since its placement, so I think it's time to let this one go.

The Frankton Saleyards (which will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2017) were originally at the western end of Ward St. The land on which the Frankton Saleyards now sits was volunteered by owners, the Jolly family, but rather than the council buying it outright they negotiated an exchange for shares in the new yard. This effectively set up brothers Frank and Tom Jolly as the company directors. The street facing the yards still bares the Jolly name, and the suburb itself was named for Frank.
By 1974, Frankton was the second largest saleyards in New Zealand after Addington in Christchurch. Cattle were originally driven to the yards on foot from as far away as Gisborne. It was not uncommon to walk livestock on main roads all the way to the freezing works in Horotiu.
The yards have been particularly important in the development of Frankton. So important was the trade for the city that the local papers use to have designated stock reporters who would often appear to photograph a prize bull.
The yards have not just been reserved for cows, sheep and pigs either. They built a deer house when they reached their peak in the 80s and have sold emus, angora goats, and even ostriches.
Please do not put swag in the container as it will make removing the log unnecessarily difficult. Please use stealth! There is a service station across the road and the Saleyards are often a busy place. The difficulty rating reflects the often ‘muggly’ nature of the location not the difficulty of the hide. You must sign the physical log, getting your hands on it is all part of the fun.
