I have many fond memories of coming to Waiouru when I was just a young lad. When my father passed away in 1969 his brother John Cross and his wife Margaret took us in for the school holidays. For several years Mum with myself the oldest and my brother Douglas and Cynthia, and Aaron would head down there from Auckland on the train and Margaret would always greet us at 1am or so and always have hot soup made for us, which was always welcome in the cold winters there. We would stay there all the school holidays and Uncle John took us everywhere! At 18 I eventually got my drivers licence there too with my uncles help as did Douglas. Wonderful memories!.
