Red Tag Rook Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

zaybex: I was driving by this morning and noticed this cache requiring my attention:

I found that a Komatsu http://www.komatsu.is/komatsu/equipmentcentral/europe/data/new_equipment/1472740200.jpg had found this cache and HAD NOT put it back. The contents were scattered. I found the container bottom but not the cover. I recovered everything that I could find, including the logbook (yay!). This was a fun cache. I'll try to make some more like this one.

Geocache Description:

This cache is placed at a multi-leg route that requires some careful math and searching. You will travel about 12 miles through the course and it will take you about 1 hour. It is mostly urban and the most difficult part is navigating through the course. The kids will enjoy this one, but do keep an eye on them at waypoint 3.

The cache is a large plastic container (2 gal.) and is very well stocked. When you find it, you will be very delighted with it's contents. There will be something within it that you will want. The first one to find it will have the opportunity to take something very nice back to the Mrs.

And thus begins your quest to locate the Red Tag Rook. It is named this because of the way the rook moves on the chess board. As you move through each stage of the hunt, you will only be moving along one axis each time. You will find a clue at each location to help you calculate your next waypoint of the route. All calculations are done in WGS-84 format. You should bring along a pencil to help with the simple arithmetic. As you work with coordinates, work only with the calculated coordinates. Never put your GPS reading into a calculation. Let's get started.

  1. W86° 39.043
    last 3 digits -.721
    W86° 38.322
Proceed to the initial coordinates above. Near this location is a light pole with an electrical panel. Find the toll-free phone number on the panel and head EAST the decimal amount of the last 3 digits. Example: If the phone number is 800-245-4721, subtract 0.721 from W86° 39.043. Your coordinates for waypoint 2 would be: N34° 42.748 W86° 38.322
WARNING: Although this is a highly visited public facility on State property, the on-site constables must consider this particular light pole as their favorite, even though it is on the road out by the gate. Be swift at retrieving that phone number and they might not see you.

  2. At this waypoint, seek a RED TAG stuck on a WHITE PIPE. Adjust your current waypoint with the direction and distance on the red tag. If the red tag has an N, add the value to your waypoint N. If the red tag has an S, subtract the value from your waypoint N. Add W to W, Subtract E from W. Figure your new coordinates and proceed to waypoint 3.
  3. Near the road, look for a light pole beside an underground utility marker. There is a RED TAG here. Adjust your coordinates and proceed to waypoint 4.
  4. Find another RED TAG. Proceed to waypoint 5.
  5. Waypoint 5 will lead you to a private residence. STAY ON THE STREET! Your GPS should clearly point directly at the front porch of a house. The address is a 4 digit number. Using the address, write down a two digit number with the first and third digits of the address. Write down another two digit number with the second and fourth digits of the address. Locate in your current GPS waypoint the second number you wrote down and change it to the first number you wrote down. Proceed to the new waypoint 6. Example: If the address is 5432, you change N34° 42.748 W86° 38.322 into N34° 53.748 W86° 38.322.
  6. This is will clearly lead you to a commercial building. Find the building number and change one of your sevens to the building number. Go there.
  7. This is also a private residence. STAY ON THE STREET! On the curb is a 3 digit number that ends with 7. Forget about the 7. Find in your waypoint the other two curb digits. Increment that number by one. That's where the cache is. Go get it!

Have fun, and please sign the log book and note your barter there and below.
