Alpine wall (Vallo Alpino) is a system of fortifications made up of defensive buildings (bunker). It was built by Mussolini in the period before the Second World War in order to protect the Italian border of neighboring countries, such as France, Switzerland, Austria and Yugoslavia.
The City of Rijeka represented a weak spot in the Alpine walls. Not only the town was on the border with Yugoslavia, but the border was passing through the city center!
On the hills to the north-eastern border the defence of the city was reinforced by building permanent concrete or underground fortresses, which turned Rijeka into one of the strongest points along the Alpine wall, and definitely the highest point along the 220 km long border between Italy and Yugoslavia.
The power of the border can be clearly seen from the fact that along the line with lenght of only 4 km, was planned to build 8 forposts with 10 forts ("so-called opera"), with at least 60 combat blocks.
By the beginning of the war, in 1941, 2 forposts were completed (4 operas, 27 combat blocks). The remaining 6 are in various stages of construction, ranging from mere excavation in almost complete.
This geocache will show us how a bunker looks in its early stage.
