Pride and Prejudice Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mhangarta: I liked this cache as it tied a few personal lines together.
My late father had made the original railings which had his nameplate on them.
My wife's favourite novel gave me the title, and she grew up (a second daughter no less) in view of the bridge.
The railings were replaced late 2017 so it's time to archive this one.

Geocache Description:

A novel (or TV series or film) whereby Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet overcome their differences and first impressions to fall in love with each other. One of the more inventive adaptations is the zombie apocalypse version, but each to their own.

Fitzwilliam Darcy is a wealthy man, 'tall, dark and handsome'. Elizabeth is the second daughter of Mr. Bennet and is both clever, attractive and witty.

Darcy is an arrogant man and has to challenge his conceptions of the world around him and his place in it. Elizabeth on the other hand is quick to judge and forms snap impressions of other people. And so we have their character defects and our title - 'Pride and Prejudice'.

The opening line of the novel declares "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." Indeed.

A few other quotes from this delightful novel:

"I must learn to be content with being happier than I deserve."

"Nobody can tell what I suffer! But it is always so. Those who do not complain are never pitied."

“For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbours, and laugh at them in our turn?”

And so on and so forth.

The bridge you are standing on would be a lot less safe without the handsome railings which are found on both sides. This is very helpful, especially for families with young children. Said railings were fabricated and put in place back when the bridge was built - no great surprise there. The maker of the railings, his son and his grandson all share the same moniker which can (no longer) be found at the cache co-ordinates.

Given the family name it is fitting that a certain clever, attractive and witty second daughter who grew up within sight of this bridge found her own Mr. Darcy, pride and prejudice notwithstanding.

In late 2017 the bridge was upgraded and the railings replaced so a little explanation may be in order. The railings had been put up by my grandfather and late father and a plaque with their name provided a clue to the cache location.

As for the clever, attractive and witty second daughter..... “I cannot fix on the hour, or the spot, or the look, or the words which laid the foundation. It is too long ago. I was in the middle before I knew that I had begun”.

And we now have clever, witty and attractive daughters of our own.
