This cache is placed in a what was initially known as the “Johnsonville Recreation Grounds”. The park was first gazetted in 1906, for “the purpose of pleasure-grounds and recreation-grounds for the enjoyment of the inhabitants of the Johnsonville Town District”.
The Park was re-named in 1952, to honour one of Johnsonville’s best known sporting names.
Alexander Augustus (Alex) Moore was born in 1882. In 1909 he was appointed to the Wellington Cricket Association to represent the Junior Cricket Clubs. He was Chairman of the Town Board for 12 years between 1916 and 1934. He was also President of the Johnsonville Rugby Club from 1909-1913 and in 1919 - 1951. For his lengthy service to the cricket club he was awarded life membership in 1951.
Nowadays Alex Moore Park is used regularly for a multitude of sports, such as harriers, athletics, softball, cricket, rugby and football. And, of course, by the community as a casual recreation space.
