In the 1890’s S.J. Barnum built a school on family property at Livingston Bay, where for a time neighborhood children could attend the first three grades. (The extension of the west façade, which is now Pioneer Hall, is older than the main building itself. It was originally the Livingston Bay School.) The school was already in existence when the Lutherans got permission to use it for worship in 1895.
Construction of the church began in 1904 and in 1906 the church building was completed at this location. The materials for the church were all transported by horse and wagon which included a crossing of the Stillaguamish ferry.
The church was built with all volunteer labor, at the following cost:
Cost of statue$9.60
Cost of Bell$70.40
Total cost of church$904.00
The wood for the altar came as gifts to J.P.Larson, one of the principal builders, from captains of sailing ships coming to pick up lumber at the Utsalady mill. Eleven different exotic woods were used.
