Geocache Description:

Valle de la Muerte or Death Valley is located in the Salt Mountain Range in the Atacama desert, Chile.

The formation of the Death Valley

Several million years ago, a submerged lake (endoreic) was laying in place of the Death Valley. Horizontal layers of sedimentaccumulated there over time. These layers are 23 million years old. They were then pushed and folded by the movement of the Earth's core and by the tectonic plates, creating the Salt Mountain Range and the Andes.

We can say that the formation of the Death Valley date from the Oligocene geological period, marked by the mass extinction of living species, probably caused by a meteorite.15 million years ago, during the Miocene geological period, the area became arid, rainfall being blocked in the east by the Andes and to the west by the Cordillera of the coast.

The huge natural sculptures you can find in the Death Valley have been eroded by wind, sun and rain over millions of years. The grains of sand carried by the wind riddle minerals, bite, pierce the small alveoli and slowly shape the landscapes.

Which minerals are located in the Death Valley?

The Death Valley is mostly made of salt (sodium chloride), gypsum, borax, anhydrite and clay. Traces of various volcanic minerals can also be found. Stratifications and colorations depend on the diversity of its minerals.
Gypsum is a colorless mineral or translucent white. Its texture is massive and very fibrous. It is found in volcanic areas or near sulphide deposits.

Anhydrite is generally a colorless rock with fiber and bulk crystals such as gypsum. Composed mainly of sulphate. Anhyrite gives the rocka particular aspect: that of having been sprinkled with salt.

Borax exists only in the driest areas of the world. Composed of sodium borate (due to volcanic activity), one located in Death Valley is white with near chalk texture.

In order to log this EarthCache as found, simply visit GZ and answer these 3 questions:
  • At GZ you'll be surrounded by "rock walls": Take a closer look at the texture of the "rock walls" and describe the two types of textures with your own words. What kinf of erosion is responsable of those textures in your opinion ?
  • Using your GPS or any other tool, can you give me the altitude at GZ
  • Facing you is a big cavity in the "rocky wall", estimate its dimensions (height and width).
  • Optional (but appreciated): take a photo of you and your GPS in Death Valley (please make sure the cavity is not fully visible)

Send your answers via private message. You do not need to wait for validation to log this cache as found. If your answers are incorrect or anything looks strange, I will contact you.
