Geocache Description:

A straightforward offset multi based upon the lovely church of St Briochus, Lezant

The Church

The church on this site was dedicated to St Briochus on 25th september 1259.

Little remains of the original Norman church which would have been the size of the present Chancel although the south-east butress belongs to that period. The font of carved ventergen is also Norman but suffered damage at the hands of Cromwell's men. Ouside the church on the west wall of the south porch is a Norman corbel head representing either a cat or the devil.

The church as it now stands was completed in the 15th Century with the tower being added in 1480. In the north aisle there still remains the the original stairway which would have led to the Rood Loft. This provided the devout with a quiet place for their private prayers at the Foot of The Cross.

It is believed that a chapel dedicated to St Catherine once stood where the organ now is and that in the floor there lies buried the remains of Henry Trecarrell who built Trecarrell Manor in the 16th century. He served as Deputy-Lieutenant of County with sir Walter Raleigh.

In the south-east corner of the church is a large carved slate memorial to the Trefusis family. The altar tomb is of Thomas Trefusis who died in 1610, and of his wife Mary and their children.

The church is normally open during the daytime and is worth a visit inside.
