Geocache Description:

This is our third cache in Frederick County and it’s one of our favorite spots as you will discover. The cache is located in the Frederick County Water Shed. The drive to the trail is through some of the most beautiful areas of the county and is not known to many people. Again this is one of our special places in the county that really shows it beauty. Please keep it a secret just to Geocachers.

Before you begin you quest for this cache you should have a map of the surrounding area. Begin your quest at N39°28.198' by W077°29.664' follow Gambrill Park Rd. (GPR) in you trusty steed. There are two options to get to your next waypoint. For the adventures (those with SUV or trucks) proceed to N39°32.926' by W77°30.050' which is Delauter Rd. (about 5.9 miles)and take a right. Follow Delauter till your can go no further and take a right onto Fishing Creek Rd this will change to Mountain Dale Rd if you bare left at the junction. At this point jump down one paragraph.

For those that don’t feel so adventurous proceed to N39°30.805' by W77°29.970' which is Hamburg Rd (about 3.4 miles) and take a right. Follow Hamburg for about .75 of a mile than take a left on Fishing Creek Rd. Follow Fishing Creek till you cross a bridge and come to a junction this is Mountain Dale Rd.

Now that both parties are on Mountain Dale Rd. follow it for about 1.5 miles. You will come to a junction in the road this is GPR again. Take a sharp left if you go by a large lake on your right you have gone to far. I know what you are all saying why didn’t I have you just follow GPR. Now you all know the answer to that it would have been to easy and anyway wasn’t Delauter cool. Follow GPR for about 1.35 miles to N39°32.761'by W77°27.866' and dismount your trusty steed.

We begin this part of the quest on foot. Speaking of feet you will have to keep them dry, so I suggest you look to your right and cross on one of the logs but watch of for Little John. Follow the trail up the hill, if you are not going up the hill after you crossed the second stream you are lost. About a .10 of a mile you will come to a junction turn right and follow the trail for another .90 of a mile. There are a couple of junctions you will come to always bare to your right. At the 1 mile mark you should begin looking for N39°31.909' by W77°27.619' (Updated Coordinates) which is through the wood to your left. The cache is in a bucket with a red top.

My son and I have named this place Castle Rock. Please take some time to enjoy the view atop this magnificent rock formation and to explore its many secrets. You might catch a glimpse of a wild turkey or a passing family of deer. If you have the time bring your lunch sit among these beautiful and ancient boulders. As you will see this is a very special place. Thank you selecting this cache as your next quest. We hoped you will enjoy this quest and as always Happy Hunting!

You do not need to climb on the rocks to find this cache, this rock formation is home to numerous Timber Rattle Snakes, and by choosing to climb on the rocks you are doing so at your own risk.

Happy Trails & Marylander.
